JUTC to Receive 93 New Buses in Major Fleet Expansion Initiative

The Honourable Daryl Vaz, Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, is set to officially hand over 93 new buses to the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) in a significant boost to Jamaica’s public transportation system.

The keynote address at the handover ceremony will be delivered by Prime Minister, the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, while Minister Vaz is expected to provide remarks outlining the scope and impact of the initiative.

The new units form part of the Government’s broader strategy to modernize and expand the JUTC’s fleet, aimed at improving commuter efficiency, safety, and comfort across the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR) and adjoining routes.

A Move Toward Smarter, Safer Public Transit

This latest addition to the JUTC fleet is aligned with national efforts to:

  • Enhance route reliability and reduce delays

  • Increase capacity to meet rising commuter demand

  • Introduce newer, fuel-efficient models that lower operational costs

The investment also underscores the Government’s commitment to climate resilience, digital innovation, and accessibility within the transportation sector.

Our Opinion

This major fleet expansion is a welcome step toward transforming Jamaica’s public transport. In a country where many rely heavily on buses for daily mobility, modernizing the fleet not only boosts commuter confidence but also strengthens economic activity through greater connectivity. The inclusion of technology-driven features and safer designs reflects a long-overdue commitment to 21st-century mobility.
