ST ANN, Jamaica |
Seven people, including two minors, have been hospitalized following a serious three-vehicle collision on Queens Highway in Discovery Bay, St Ann, early Wednesday.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) confirmed that the crash involved a Toyota Noah minivan, an SUV, and a public passenger vehicle. While the full details of the incident remain unclear, emergency responders were still on the scene as of Wednesday afternoon.
The extent of the injuries sustained by the victims has not yet been disclosed, and authorities have not confirmed the cause of the collision.
Ongoing Investigation
Investigators are expected to review CCTV footage, interview witnesses, and conduct assessments of the vehicles involved to determine liability and whether speeding, overtaking, or mechanical failure played a role.
Police have yet to release the identities of the victims, and family members are being notified.
Heightened Safety Concerns
This latest incident adds to a worrying trend of serious crashes across the island. Earlier this week, opposition spokesman on transport, Mikael Phillips, slammed the government for failing to address known crash-prone areas and called for urgent safety interventions.
According to the Island Traffic Authority, 223 road deaths have occurred so far this year—a 4% increase compared to the same period last year.
Our Opinion
This tragic crash underscores the urgent need for stricter traffic enforcement, safer road designs, and public education campaigns. The fact that minors are among the injured highlights the wider societal cost of neglecting traffic safety. The government must prioritize immediate interventions along dangerous corridors like Queens Highway.
