Sean Kingston’s Mother Sentenced to 5 Years in Federal Prison for $1M Fraud Scheme

KINGSTON, Jamaica

Janice Turner, the 63-year-old mother of Jamaican-American singer Sean Kingston, has been sentenced to five years in US federal prison after being convicted in a multi-million-dollar fraud scheme involving luxury goods and false wire transfers.

The sentence, handed down on Wednesday, July 23, follows Turner’s conviction alongside her son, whose real name is Kisean Anderson, in a federal wire fraud case that defrauded businesses of more than US$1 million. Turner will also serve three years of supervised release following her prison term and may face deportation to Jamaica.

The Fraud Scheme

Federal prosecutors outlined a pattern of deception by Turner and Kingston between October 2023 and March 2024. The duo used their celebrity image to secure high-end items such as luxury vehicles, jewelry, and custom furniture by falsely claiming to have sent wire transfers that were never completed.

Among the defrauded entities were:

  • Jewelry dealers: Nearly $500,000 in losses

  • Bank of America: $200,000

  • A luxury SUV dealer: $160,000

  • First Republic Bank: Over $100,000

  • A custom bed maker: $86,000

Despite promises of payment, investigators confirmed no money ever changed hands.

Courtroom Plea and History

Before sentencing, Turner addressed the court, saying:

“I'm sorry. My intention was to keep my son afloat in this difficult industry. They used him and abused him. I am begging for mercy for me and my son.”

Turner’s attorney argued that most victims were made financially whole and asked for leniency due to her age and health conditions. However, the court considered her prior conviction for bank fraud in 2006, for which she served over a year in prison.

Kingston’s Legal Fate Still Pending

Sean Kingston, 35, remains on house arrest and did not attend his mother’s sentencing. He submitted a written plea to the judge asking for compassion on her behalf. His own sentencing is scheduled for August 28, 2025.

Kingston was arrested in May 2024 at a U.S. Army base in California and was previously serving probation for trafficking stolen property at the time of his new charges.

Our Opinion

The sentencing of Janice Turner marks a sobering fall from grace in a case that mixes celebrity, fraud, and exploitation. While her plea for mercy speaks to a mother’s desire to protect her son, the facts show a long-standing pattern of deception. This case serves as a warning: celebrity status does not exempt anyone from accountability. The justice system must continue to send a clear message that fraud will be punished—regardless of who you are.
