Over 4,000 e-Motor Vehicle Registration Certificates Issued in First 48 Hours of Rollout

KINGSTON, Jamaica

More than 4,000 electronic Motor Vehicle Registration Certificates (eMVRC) have been successfully issued across Jamaica in just two days following the official rollout of the Tax Administration Jamaica's (TAJ) new digital vehicle registration system on Monday, July 21.

This milestone signals the official end of traditional paper-based registration certificates and decals, marking a major advancement in Jamaica’s digital transformation agenda under the Road Traffic Amendment Act 2025.

Major Transition to Digital Registration

Motorists now receive their registration certificates electronically, eliminating the need to physically collect documents from tax offices. The eMVRC is available online via the Certificate Generation and Delivery Service (CGDS) Portal at www.cgds.gov.jm or the TAJ website at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm.

To complete any registration or renewal—whether online or in person—motorists must provide a valid email address. This is essential for receiving follow-up instructions and accessing the digital certificate.

New Licensing Options Introduced

The revised system also gives vehicle owners expanded flexibility with licensing periods. In addition to the existing 6-month and 1-year options, a new 2-year licensing period has been introduced.

For instance, owners of private vehicles rated at 1,500cc may now license their cars at the following rates:

  • $6,300 for six months

  • $12,600 for one year

  • $25,200 for two years

Streamlined Access and Verification

Once registration is completed, customers receive an official receipt and a notification email outlining how to retrieve their eMVRC. This email-based system allows for easy, secure access and removes the need for repeated trips to tax offices.

The digital platform also ensures real-time access for key stakeholders, including the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), insurance companies, and financial institutions, enabling seamless document verification.

Public Education Efforts Underway

To support public understanding of the new system, TAJ in collaboration with the Island Traffic Authority (ITA)—which has also launched electronic Fitness Certificates—is hosting a live podcast on Thursday, July 24. The session will address motorists' concerns and walk users through the new eMVRC and eFitness platforms.

Details on how to join the podcast can be found on TAJ’s official website and social media pages.

Our Opinion

This rollout marks a commendable leap in Jamaica’s journey toward modernized public services. By removing physical bottlenecks and reducing manual document handling, the system is poised to enhance convenience, cut costs, and strengthen transparency. However, digital literacy and access to technology remain challenges in some rural areas. The success of this system will ultimately depend on nationwide accessibility and continued public education.
