Motorcyclist Charged After Police Seize Two Illegal Guns in St Elizabeth

A 28-year-old man is now facing multiple firearm-related charges after attempting to flee police during a routine operation in St Elizabeth on Friday, July 11. The suspect was found with two illegal firearms, ammunition, and other items.

Attempt to Escape Ends in Arrest

Police say around 5:15 pm along the Vauxhall main road, lawmen signalled a motorcyclist to stop during a routine security checkpoint. Instead of complying, the rider turned the bike to flee, lost control, and fell.

The suspect, identified as Alphanson O’Brian Bruce, otherwise called “Phanso”, a welder from Cuffes Pen District, was apprehended and searched.

Weapons and Ammunition Seized

Police recovered the following items:

  • A .22 revolver with an obscured serial number, loaded with eight .22mm cartridges

  • A Colt .45 pistol with an empty magazine

  • Nine .45mm cartridges

  • Thirteen 9mm cartridges

  • Seven additional .22mm cartridges

  • A pack of Lion Pride rolling papers

  • One ounce of ganja in a transparent bag

Bruce has since been charged with:

  • Two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon

  • Unauthorised possession of ammunition

Commendation from Police

Superintendent Coleridge Minto, head of the St Elizabeth Division, praised the officers for their quick and professional handling of the operation. He urged citizens to report criminal activity via 119, Crime Stop at 311, or their nearest police station.

Our Opinion

This arrest underscores how routine traffic stops continue to expose deeper criminal elements in rural Jamaica. The recovery of multiple illegal firearms from a single individual reflects the ongoing proliferation of weapons, even outside of urban centers. Continued community-police partnerships are crucial to disrupting these networks and increasing public safety.
